For the week ending June 26, Y&R featured a number of key storylines, including the Fake Art, Gaslighting Ashley and The Real Phillip Chancellor. Tuesday’s episode was pre-empted for a Presidential address, which did not count towards the ratings. The first appearance of Michael Muhney as the new Adam Newman, and the same sex pairing of Rafe and Adam was also featured.

The week ending July 3 featured climactic points in 3 major storylines, specifically the arrival of the real P3, the fallout of Cane and P3’s fraud, the same sex kiss between Rafe and Adam, the exposure of Mary Jane’s involvement in Summer’s hospitalization, and the addition of Deacon Sharpe to the Fake art storyline.

Digital TV Conversion Update

June 12 was the official date of conversion to digital signals, and since then, the number of completely unprepared households has continued to decline rapidly. Nielsen’s latest report released July 1st, states that only 1.5 % of US households remain completely unready for digital conversion. While only a small proportion of households remain unready, African-Americans, Hispanics, Asians and those under 35 are more likely to be completely unready as compared to Caucasians and those over 55.

Rather than assist Nielsen panelists in upgrading to digital boxes, Nielsen opted to have panelists upgrade to digital without their interference. This decision was made to keep their panels representative of the US TV viewing public throughout the digital conversion. As a result of this decision, there will be some impact from digital TV unpreparedness in Y&R ratings, particularly as Y&R’s audience skews towards African-Americans which have not upgraded as quickly as caucasians. Nonetheless, with such low percentages of unpreparedness, it is unclear how significant or prolonged this impact on ratings may have been.

The episodes airing this week featured the following storylines on a day to day basis…

Monday: 3.5/4,904,000 – Chloe sends Raul to interrupt Billy and Mac who are about make love at Jimmy’s bar. Phyllis recommends MJ as a love interest to Jack who says she’s just a fling. Adam’s doctor meets Victor and Olivia.

Tuesday: 3.4/4,706,000 – Devon fantasizes about Tyra. Neil suggests Jill for Chancellor. Adam is caught by Victor and Ashley listening to a recording of Sabrina’s voice on his computer. Cane complains to Kay about Nina’s questions.

Wednesday: 3.4/4,776,000 – After getting caught, Adam fools Victor and Ashley and then frames Estella. Nina tells Kay and Jill why she wants to exhume Phillip’s body. Mac gives Raul his ring back.

Thursday: 3.4/4,626,000 – MJ overhears Jack saying their fling is nothing serious. Jana and Daniel are arrested. Lily questions what is wrong with Cane.

Friday: 3.5/4,831,000 – Nina finds Phillip’s casket empty. Lily figures out Cane is upset about the exhumation. Nikki asks Ashley and Victor to think twice about blaming Estella for the gaslighting.

There was no apparent trend break in the ratings due to the switch to digital. According to Nielsen, in the first week after the digital switch, an additional 500,000 families became ready to receive digital signals on their televisions.
